Health and safety for all in the County of Haliburton
Due to an increasing number of confirmed COVID-19 cases throughout the Province of Ontario, now is the time to be hyper-vigilant as a community, for the protection of our families and neighbours. At this time, there has not been a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the County of Haliburton. However, as a community, we need to follow the recommendations of the federal and provincial governments, and our local Health Unit. Those recommendations are to continue practicing social distancing and self-isolation as much as possible.
Ignoring safety precautions puts everyone at risk
“It has come to our attention that unfortunately, there have been some violations of best practices around self-isolation throughout our community,” Liz Danielsen, Haliburton County Warden, “the only chance we have at this time in keeping COVID-19 outside of our County and helping to combat the spread in Ontario and beyond, is for residents and visitors to practice social distancing to the greatest extent possible, and when required – self-isolate. The longer these directives are ignored, the longer we will be dealing with the consequences.”
Social distancing is crucial
Social distancing means staying in your home with only immediate members of your family, not going to public venues, having social gatherings or going out shopping for non-essentials. These practices are in place for the protection of everyone in our community and particularly our most vulnerable; especially those with immune deficiencies or other compromising health conditions.
Self-isolation required for travellers
For anyone who has recently travelled and returned home, please self-isolate for the required 14 days. If you require food or other essentials items, contact a relative, friend or neighbour who can go to the store for you and deliver to your home.
Consequences for those who do not follow rules
The Province of Ontario has declared a State of Emergency and the County of Haliburton is currently under a local State of Emergency, which means that there could be implications for those who fail to self-isolate.
Following recommendations made by upper levels of government, also ensures that we do not overload our health care system and our front line workers; they are doing all they can during this difficult time to serve and protect us. With your cooperation and help we can hopefully prevent the spread of COVID-19 into or within the County of Haliburton.
