Measure and Annotate / Identify X Y coordinate

In this section the user will learn how to measure, draw features and add text to the map view. In addition the user can also identify an X Y

coordinate (Refer to the Draw point icon) in the map view using the ‘Measure / Annotate’ map tool.

Measure / Annotate Map Tool

The ‘Measure / Annotate’ map tool is used to measure features, show measurements, add text in the map view as well as identify an

X Y coordinate.

How to open ‘Measure / Annotate’ Map Tool

This icon allows the user to open the ‘Measure/Annotate map tool. To open the ‘Measure / Annotate’ map tool, position

the cursor over the ‘Map’  menu and select the ‘Measure / Annotate’ map tool as shown in Figure 6.0. The ‘Measure / Annotate’

map tool will open as shown in Figure 6.1.

How to use the Measure / Annotate Map Tool

The tools used by the ‘Measure / Annotate’ map tool are as follows:

Draw (measure) – This icon allows the user to draw a point, line, polygon, or custom area, as well as add text in the map view.

Measurements – This icon allows the user to specify the type of measurement and show the measurement either distance or

area units in the map view.

Minimize – This icon allows the user to minimize the ‘Measure / Annotate’ map tool. To maximize or reopen the map  tool, simply

select the marker  when the tool is minimized.

Close – This icon allows the user to close the map tool.

Draw Feature

Follow the below steps to draw and measure a feature in the map view or identify an XY coordinate.

1)     To draw or measure a feature in the map view, refer to the descriptions below on how to use the draw tools available in

the ‘Measure and Annotate’ screen shown in Figure 6.2.

How to use the Draw Tools

Below is a description of how to use each draw tool available in the ‘Measure and Annotate’ screen.

Draw PointThis icon allows a user to place a point in the map view. Click the Draw Point icon and click on the map view.

This tool also allows the user to identify an X Y coordinate location. Select the ‘Measurement’  tool, then from the ‘Measurements’ screen shown in Figure 6.3 above select the check mark box, followed by selecting the draw  icon and follow the above italicized directions for drawing a point in the map view.

Draw Line – This icon allows a user to draw a line in the map view. Click the Draw Line icon, click on the map view, move the cursor to the new position and end the line by double clicking.

This tool also allows a user to measure the length or distance of a line. Select the ‘Measurement’  tool, then from the ‘Measurements’ screen shown in Figure 6.3 above select the check mark box, select the ‘Distance Units’ drop down list and choose the distance units, select the draw  icon and follow the above italicized directions for drawling a line in the map view.

This tool also allows a user to measure the area and perimeter of a feature in the map view. Select the ‘Measurement’  tool, then from the ‘Measurements’ screen shown in Figure 6.3 above select the check mark box, select the ‘Distance Units’ drop down list and choose the distance units, select the draw  icon and follow the above italicized directions for drawing a freehand line in the map view.

Draw Polygon – This icon allows a user to draw a polygon on custom shape in the map view. Click the Draw Polygon icon, click in the map view, drag the cursor to the new position, and continue to move and click in different positions, double click to end the drawing.

Note: The drawing does not appear on first click, at the third click the drawing will start to appear.

This tool also allows a user to measure the area and perimeter of a feature in the map view. Select the ‘Measurement’  tool, then from the ‘Measurements’ screen shown in Figure 6.3 above select the check mark box, select the ‘Area Units’ drop down list and choose the area units, select the draw  icon and follow the above italicized directions for drawing a polygon or custom drawing in the map view.
